Ionic Imbalance in Neuronal Pathologies

John Robert Cressman, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Physics, George Mason University

Seizures and Migraines share a number of similar physiological features.  Perhaps most striking is the prominent role of ionic imbalance in the initiation, and spread of pathological activity within the brain. We have explored these features experimental and computationally in an attempt to understand the physiological abnormalities that can lead to these conditions.  Results suggest that failures in glial and vascular support are likely candidates for poor ionic regulation and are therefore potential targets for treatments.  I will conclude with results utilizing focused ultrasound stimulation to modulate the local ionic environment and discuss its potential clinical applications.
